A different perspective to “Purpose of Life”

Before you sigh and think oh yet again a discussion on the most often posed question, I promise to present this in a very different perspective.

Dr. Laurence Brown put this beautifully in his discussion on the subject, “Well, why are we here? To amass fame and fortune? To make music and babies? To be the richest man or woman in the graveyard for, as we are jokingly told, “He who dies with the most toys wins?” No, there must be more to life than that, so let’s think about this.”

An interesting survey on “Purpose of Life” gave the participants some of the following options to choose from.

Staying alive, Seeking knowledge, developing empathy to help others/humanity, having unconditional love for everyone/everything, Simply living your life as well as you can, Becoming famous, Becoming powerful, mastering your mind to end emotional suffering,Becoming wealthy, enjoying your life/being happy, Experiencing as much as you can, doing what you love (following your dreams/destiny).

A common thread in most of the above options is a pursuit of individual whims and fancies. It means each individual has to decipher and decode for himself/herself what his/her purpose of life is according to what he/she perceives and pursues it no matter how it impacts the others around him/her.

It is intriguing how people tend to think God could have created us and left us to figure out for ourselves what our purpose in life is (okay this blog is for those of you who have accepted the premise that God exists, for the rest please read my blog on “Questionable Hypothesis of Evolution”).

To elaborate why it is intriguing, consider the following personalities:

Consider the case of a mother of two daughters, who believed that her life purpose was fulfilling rituals bequeathed to her by her ancestors just to “fit in” and takes pains to present a picture perfect life to outsiders no matter what happens in her life or the lives of her daughters. The purpose of life for her was to “fit in”.

Her husband never pursued any career. He was happy to convince himself that his purpose was to just exist as the husband, entertain himself with friends and parties, of course going out of his way to help others in whatever way he could.

One of their daughters wanted to remain unmarried as she felt that her life purpose was a combination of Being wealthy, enjoying her life, being happy, buying whatever she wants, travelling all over the world.

Her other daughter had a teenage son and a daughter.

The teenage daughter decided that her purpose of life was to constantly entertain herself, enjoy unlimited freedom, satiate all her wants, unquestioned and unabated. She was happy with her definition of purpose of life.

The teenage son wanted to quit studies and become a “Rock Star”. His life revolved around emulating his Rock star idols and he thought he would have found his purpose of life once he achieved this dream.

There is a sizeable majority of people who just want to lead normal lives, study, earn, eat, drink, make merry, procreate, bring up kids and die. They convince themselves that as long as they do these mundane activities perfectly and be the best in whatever they do, not harming any one in the process, they have lived a purposeful life.

In the above scenario, even if the relationships seem quite confusing to you, you can at least realise that each one has a different purpose of life. The sense of happiness and purpose that each had for their life could only bring happiness to themselves or what they perceived could bring happiness to people around them.

With such restricted selfish sense of “purpose of life”, no two individuals can be happy with each other’s purpose of life, be it husband-wife, mother-daughter, employer-employee.

In fact one person’s happiness could sometimes even be another person’s misery as you can see in each of the above situations.

So much of incongruity and inconsistencies in one family on the “purpose of life”. Extrapolate it to the society, nation and the world scenario.

However, it is also interesting to understand that these very personalities align their “purpose of life” constantly as they age, mature and get themselves into a different role in their lives.

The daughter adopts the “purpose of life” of the mother when she becomes the mother.

Ironically as people age and when they “perceive” themselves to be closer to their graves, their purpose of life shifts towards realizing God, pleasing God, repenting, mellowing down, helping others and all things noble at least in majority of cases.

How can your “purpose of life” keep evolving?

A deeper introspection with an open mind will make the flawless plan, intelligent design and priceless wisdom that exist in every detail of the infinitely varied world and the purpose behind the science of creation clear.

By the way, the survey had Serving/loving God, fulfilling purpose God made humans for, Gaining entrance to heaven as a couple of its options too may be by coincidence.

In the words of “Harunyayha”, “Nobody, however, knows what will happen even in the next few hours: at any time one may have an accident, be severely injured, or become disabled. Furthermore, time flies in the countdown to one’s own death. Every day brings that predestined day closer. Death surely eradicates all ambitions, greed and desires for this world. Under the soil, neither possessions nor status prevail. Every possession with which we are being stingy, including the body, will also vanish and decay in the earth. Whether one is poor or wealthy, beautiful or ugly, one will be wrapped in a simple shroud one day.

We believe that The Truth of The Life of This World offers an explanation regarding the real nature of human life. It is a short and deceptive life in which worldly desires seem fascinating and full of promise, but the truth is otherwise”.

Man is endowed with intelligence to create things to make his life easier. He doesn’t create things, which don’t serve him. Does it not make sense that God would have created Man to serve Him too?

Similarly every device Man creates- be it a Television, Radio, Mobile Phones, Microwaves, Refrigerators come with an Instruction Manual. Of course the Manual you so appreciated when these devices first came into usage is no more referred, as we get accustomed to their usage. Just like how we do not consciously breathe, we are adept in using these devices without referring to manuals anymore. However, we tend to forget the fine print, which says “Warranty void if tampered with”.

So, are we not tampering with our lives and the purpose we were created for by our Creator? Why do we not try to use our intellect and reasoning power to go in search of the truth? What if God had indeed sent us Instruction Manuals how to lead our lives? Of course some believe in Revelations, which is nothing but Instruction Manual from God. But are we not responsible to verify the validity of the claims of the myriad Revelations to see which is the Truth and hence understand what was our Creator’s intended purpose was for us?

If we are blessed with the opportunity to seek and study the authentic “User Manual” from the one who created you and me, we would indeed realize the true “Purpose of Life”.

Until then, let us keep striving in the pursuit of Truth. May God guide us to His Straight Path sooner..

Concept of God has to be realised by intellect not bequeathed from ancestors..

“God” – It is an indisputable fact that “God” is “One”. Everyone, be it monotheist, atheist, polytheist, agnostic or any name we would like to call ourself has an innate belief that there is God and He is one. It is a hidden truth which man is born with. Man is just oblivious that deep in his heart, the knowledge- the intimate feeling of Oneness of God is hidden.

It just needs an open discerning mind with no prejudices and preconceived notions, staying clear of what he/she and his/her ancestors have been blindly following to embark on a sincere goal of unraveling the truth and awaken his spirit to the truth.

The “Polytheists” – most of them admit that there is one God and claim that the idols and things/persons they associate with God are just means to reach and realize God.

God is transcendent, sublime and mystical to name a few attributes, which are incommunicable (those that belong to God alone). He is mystical and hence beyond the realm of human perception. Man cannot and has no right to perceive God in any form. To perceive something you should have perceived it with one or more of your senses.

When man has not perceived God in any form, it is not rational or logical that he comes up with his own theories and notions about God. He needs to go in search of truth, verify the various theories that are either thrust on him by his parents/ancestors or theories he bumps upon on his path, use his reason and intellects and only accept what appeals to his reasoning.

Parents are no more able to dictate what you study, what you wear, where you work, who you marry or who you befriend..when it comes to just the trivial worldly milestones, we feel we are mature, capable and wise enough to decide for ourselves what we want and what we think is right.

When it comes to “God” – our creator- why don’t we use your reasoning power and intellect to unravel what the “truth” is in reality instead of just blindly accepting bequeathed concepts and practices? Food for thought?
